Antique silver pendant with Shiva Nataraja – KHARWANDI. A pendant made of antique silver (approx. 40 – 50 years old) and depicting Shiva Nataraja. The pendant is embellished with decorative elements typical of traditional Indian jewellery.
One of the most loved and replicated forms with which Shiva is represented is that of the cosmic dancer, Nataraja. In Sanskrit Nata means “drama, dance” and Raja means “king, lord”, here Shiva is called the Lord of dance and dramatic arts.
The bronze statues depicting Shiva dancing mostly come from the southern regions of India and date back mainly to the Chola dynasty, which adopted this form of the god as a court emblem.
The iconography incorporates contrasting elements: the terrible cosmic dance which leads inexorably to death and the promise of liberation through the infinite grace of God, representing a spirituality that transcends all duality.
