Barong remains among the most popular forms of entertainment in Bali today. This ritual drama traditionally depicts the struggle between the benign beast figure of the Barong against Rangda, a witch feared for her powers of destruction.

Barong is one of the most renowned and appreciated forms of Balinese dance theater and its importance has developed over time thanks to its esoteric value and scenographic effectiveness.

The Barong dance is described as a clash between the forces of good and evil. However, it would be superficial to describe this representation by identifying the two figures as a hero and an antagonist. The whole affair is a celebration through dance, music and theater of the entire mythological and religious universe of Bali.

The dramatic event represented during the dance is the fight between Barong (monstrous god-animal symbol of Good and Fertility) and Rangda(a witch symbol of Evil). Rangda escapes, evil is defeated, and celestial order is restored.
