In the Viṣṇupāda temple in Gayā, in the eastern state of Bihar, India, in an octagonal basin, encased in silver, there is an irregular rock surface, with a slight indentation in the center, perceived as a footprint: the footprint of the foot of Viṣṇu: Viṣṇu himself was here and left a tangible trace around which pilgrims gather.
