The name derives from the Latin rubeus, “red”. In ancient European and Indian cultures it was defined as the stone of the sun and was a symbol of vital energy and passion. In Sanskrit it is called ratnaraj, literally “king of gems”.
The Burmese have an ancient legend that speaks of “flaming red” stones in a “bottomless” valley. The inhabitants would throw pieces of raw meat into a valley to attract vultures. They hoped that some of the stones would stick to the meat and could be retrieved by killing the birds.
The ruby was prized by the Burmese not only for its beauty, but also because they thought it conferred invulnerability and was especially used by soldiers during battles. According to tradition, it is a protective amulet that warns the wearer of danger or illness by changing color and is also considered the stone of wealth.
