At the traditional level, the Ghao is a small reliquary box made of metal depicting the symbol of Kalachakra. It is worn around the neck with a leather cord and used as an amulet. Generally it contained a printed sheet with propitiatory phrases, usually a mantra with small relics that can be blessed, fragments of monastic robes and also images depicting deities.

“Kalachakra” means cycles of time, time being a measure of change, both externally in the world and the universe, and internally in the body. As such, it can be measured in many ways. Externally, there are the cycles of the orbits of the planets, the months and seasons of the year, the phases of the moon, the hours of a day, and so on.

Internally, there are cycles of life periods, menstrual cycles, sleep cycles and so on. These external and internal cycles coincide closely with each other. Both internal and external cycles have been repeating themselves without a beginning with the continuous rebirth of universes and lives.
