The peacock which is the national bird of India has played a prominent role in Indian literature as its resplendent beauty is a source of inspiration to many. In folk tales, when the peacock displays its glorious plume, it is a sign of rain. An iconic and ubiquitous animal in Indian lore.
In Hinduism, the peacock was also a favorite of the gods. Kartikeya, the Hindu god of war, uses the peacock as his steed. The most famous iconographic association of the peacock is in fact with the god Krishna who brandished the peacock feather in his headdress. The peacock is also associated with Saraswati, the goddess of wisdom and music.
