The Hindu cult of the Sun God Surya is common to many religions, although the name with which the deity is identified varies depending on the place. In India itself Surya is a deity common to Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism.

The constant movement in the sky and its life-giving heat meant that since the dawn of humanity it became an object of worship, identified with a benevolent divinity.
